Botox Aftercare 7 Critical Do’s & Don’ts [Complete Recovery Guide]

botox aftercare

While getting Botox injections is widely known, it is the aftermath of the treatment that remains less discussed. Whether you get Botox to smooth wrinkles or to address a medical problem, you must be a little careful during recovery. We know you must have so many questions racing through your mind. That is why we have prepared a guide that will take you through the critical Dos and Don’ts of Botox aftercare.

What exactly is Botox?

A neuromodulator, Botox, works by affecting the connection between your nerves and muscles. Mind you, it’s not a dermal filler. It doesn’t fill gaps. Instead, it relaxes the muscles that cause the wrinkles and lines that appear when you smile, raise your eyebrows, or frown. When these are temporarily relaxed, the skin appears smoother and gives you a more refreshed, youthful look. The treatment targets the source of the wrinkles to give you a more natural result.

What happens during treatment?

Surprisingly, a Botox treatment is pretty straightforward. You and your provider sit across from each other at a table and discuss your goals and a treatment plan. Your provider administers small injections using a thin needle into the muscles. Injections are dispensed depending on the target area.

What happens after a Botox treatment

Typically, Botox treatment is meant to smooth wrinkles within a few days and last for at least 3 to 4 months. Right after the treatment, you may experience some mild bruising and swelling, which can be relieved with a cool compress, as well as headaches that may not be related to the injections.

It is important to know how you’ll feel after Botox before you learn what you shouldn’t do afterward. Immediately after your injections, you might experience some mild side effects:

  • Some light bruising, which is a common side effect
  • Swelling, which reduces with a cool compress or ice pack
  • Headaches, which are quite mild but may not necessarily be a side effect of Botox

Recovery time

At the provider’s office, you will be given an ice pack to address immediate side effects such as swelling, bruising, and redness. For the most part, you will get your injections and be on your way with absolutely no side effects of Botox to stop you. Clients can go about their business with no downtime, pain, or other issues. Get the desired effect of your injections immediately. Sometimes they can take a few days or a week to appear.

Botox aftercare tips

There are no real restrictions subsequent to the treatment, and resuming your regular life immediately after the injections is completely normal, with no special aftercare required. However, it would be advisable to abide by just 7 critical practices (mostly Don’ts) to be on the safer side, especially if you are someone with a sensitive system:

1. Don’t massage the area because Botox is a liquid and can spread even by half an inch.

2. Don’t lie down instantly. Stay upright for about three to four hours after treatment.

3. Don’t rub your face for at least 12 hours after the treatment.

4. Avoid happy hour on Botox day.

5. Avoid NSAIDs like ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen sodium

6. Don’t exercise immediately after treatment

7. Take a break from going out into the heat and sunlight to limit UV exposure

Tip: You can touch your face, but avoid rubbing it or massaging it for the first 24 hours.

Your skincare routine after Botox

Your skincare routine needs a little tweak after your treatment. The goal over the first few days is to go gentle and let the Botox settle. This way, you will avoid irritation. Your skin needs a vacation from intense products. But that does not mean you completely stop taking care of your skin. Change or adjust your approach to focus on hydrating and soothing products. Ensure you get refreshing results, and once you have settled down, reintroduce your products back into your routine.
